The Dolphin Who Asked A Human For Help

The dolphin who asked a human for help

When these things happen and we have graphic and personal testimonies, they quickly become news. They are a reflection of the greatness of the animal world, the one from which we have to learn so much, facts full of sensitivity and greatness that always force us to stop, and to think a little about that doubtful position that humans have, as the most intelligent beings on our planet. .

Is it normal for a cetacean to ask a person for help? We all know the great slaughters that eastern countries carry out every year, the cruel persecutions on whales and even the hunts carried out on sharks in search of their fins . The world of the ocean is not exactly a scenario that humans have respected too much. Let’s also think about the serious dumping of plastics on the seas, that environmental pollution that is affecting the marine ecosystem.

It is something to keep in mind and that should make us think a bit: the greatness of this aquatic scene does not only lie in its immense extension, but also   in the authentic “humanity” of the animals that inhabit it. Those unknown brothers who surprise us so many times.

THE DOLPHIN THAT REQUESTED THE MOST SUITABLE HUMAN FOR HELP

Laros Keller is a diver with many years of experience. There are many things that he has learned from the world of the ocean, but according to what he explained to the “Daily Mail”, what happened recently surpasses anything that has lived in that environment that he has always loved.

That morning he was making a documentary in Hawaii for Ocean Wings Hawaii, Inc. It was a simple thing: follow a group of stingrays and film their movements for some time. They are a type of magnetic and attractive animals that the general public always tend to like. Immersed as he was in his work, he suddenly realized that a white shadow was approaching him from afar. Was it a dolphin? Yes, it was.

But something was happening. Keller could not stop looking with some bewilderment as the animal approached him, advanced with difficulty, especially on the left side of his body. It was as if at any moment, he was going to sink down into the depths of the ocean. And what was even more curious. She was getting closer to him in a way that was not normal, indeed, she even clung to him. It was a bottlenose dolphin, one of the most intelligent species in the animal kingdom.

Keller knew the intelligence of these animals, so he sensed that something must happen. There it was … the animal had a fishing line stuck with a hook in its left pectoral fin. It was clear what that dolphin was asking him: to take it away, to free him from that suffering. But the most curious thing about all this was that among all the small group of divers on that expedition, the animal asked him for help in particular. It was as if he knew that he was the most experienced of all, the best suited to do what he needed.

Keller didn’t hesitate and tried to untangle the fishing line from the dolphin’s pectoral fin. The animal was patient and submissive at all times, but could not remove it completely due to the serious difficulty. The hook was on the outside of the pectoral fin, and a line was coming out of his mouth and it was so, so tight, that he could already see quite a few cuts on his body.

So the dolphin, as if understanding that it was going to take longer than expected, rose to the surface to catch air and then submerge again. Advancing back to Keller to try another way now . And the diver did so, he took out his knife and, with a quick movement, took the hook from his fin. Sure it was a painful thing, but if he hadn’t done it, if that human hadn’t helped him, our dolphin wouldn’t have lasted long. Difficulties to swim, to hunt, to relate …. It would have been a sad ending.

But fortunately the story ended well, and the brilliant dolphin left satisfied that he had trusted the right person. The most skillful, and the one who was not going to deny him help. He sensed in that aquatic environment, an emotional empathy that did not fail him at any time.

These kinds of stories happen very often. Sometimes they are anonymous stories, stories that pass from word of mouth, like that of that sailor who also took the hook from a baby dolphin, and months later, after an accident in which the fisherman in question fell into the water after the wreck of his small boat , it was that same family of dolphins who kept him afloat until they came to rescue him. Worthy of being remembered, without a doubt.
